Hamburg – The Northern Pearl

This week I was in Hamburg for 4 days to visit a friend of mine because of his birthday.

At first: we should tell the whole true story. The weather in Hamburg isn’t that great. Most of the time it is grey. But the city has enough things to do when it’s not sunny outside and I think you will get used to it. But the charm of the city outweighs it! And if the sun comes out, it is amazing!

We did a lot of sports. We went out for a jog and did some workouts. You can run along the Alster River or you are searching a route on the outskirts.

At the first day, we walked through the ‘Portugiesen Viertel’. We had a late lunch at Luigi’s Restaurant – one of the best pizzerias I ate at. In the evening, we visited the Lion King Musical. It was insane! The music, the costumes, the singing. It was amazing! All the KINDHEITSERINNERUNGEN WERDEN WACH.

The second day started with the sport again. After that, we went to the ‘Landungsbrücken’ for a walk and had lunch at ‘Brücke 10’ where you can get the best ‘Fischbrötchen’ in Hamburg. It tastes fabulous. You usually will queue, but it will be worth waiting for it. After our yummy lunch, we went to the ‘Kaffeerösterei’ which is in the ‘Speicherstadt’. One of the loveliest districts of Hamburg. Everything is old fashioned. I like this place the most. The ‘Kaffeerösterei’ is a special coffee shop with its own coffee roasters, where you can enjoy your coffee in the ambience of 1888. From there we walked to the ‘Elbphilharmonie’. You can see the great building from inside. The architecture is very nice and you can go outside on the rooftop and enjoy a really great view over the harbour. Do you remember the feeling I explained in my Blogpost of San Francisco? You will find it there, too. When you are standing in the corner of the balcony. You will have nothing in your view but the city. This feeling is amazing! I never can get enough of this!

Our dinner we took at the Hard Rock Café Hamburg. Very touristic, I know. But cool anyway.

On Saturday, we were a group of 5 people and did some sightseeing stuff. We run up the tower of St. Michaelis Church (452 steps! We were done!). From over there you have an amazing view all over the city. You will love it! The church inside is stunning! This beauty is breathtaking! I always get that special feeling, when I’m in a church like this. I can’t really describe. But I think I’m totally with me. We walked to the City Hall of Hamburg. This one is smashing! It is an old neo-renaissance architecture and it is so gorgeous. The building is located in the Altstadt quarter, which is a very nice one.

After the sightseeing tour, we walked through Ottensen, which is called the little Paris on the River Elbe. And it’s true. This quarter is so cute! There many little restaurants, bars, cafes and concept stores. That’s exactly what I love! In one of them, we had a coffee break. This shop is called THE BOX. Inside there is a bar. You can sit at old-fashioned tables and chairs, which you can buy. You can find kitchen stuff, books, pictures… This shop is very urban and so cool.

In the evening, we celebrated the birthday. We had a table at Kofookoo’s, which is a Japanese restaurant, where you can eat a very tasty sushi. After that, we met some other friends at JOLLY JUMPER – 73. This is a really cool location, which is located at the ‘Schanzenviertel’. Here you can find several locations in one. There is a little cinema, a bar, a club and some more rooms for Parties and cultural events. You can sit there by day to get some breakfast or a coffee or by night at the bar or the club with some very nice hip hop and electro beats. You can play table soccer which gives this club a little alternative touch. I’m not used to Bars like this. That’s why I loved it there. It was so much fun. We stayed there until 5 in the morning. The next day we had a big breakfast together, which was a terrific ending to my trip. The people are so lovely and open for everything. I was impressed.
